Vigan celebrates Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts

Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts was formally opened on May 1, 2014 (Labor Day) in a ceremony in front of the marker of Isabelo De Los Reyes, the father of Philippine Labor Union Movement. Guest of Honor for the event was Poland Ambassador to the Philippines Mr. Adam Jelonek, who also lead the launching of the Vigan Tourism Code. The Trade and Food Fair along Florentino St and the “Tara na sa Vigan” exhibit at the Vigan Culture and Trade Center were also opened on the same day.
To entice more tourists the city government lined up other activities to celebrate the event. Among these are the Bancathon and Fishing Competition at Playa de Oro, Brgy. Mindoro which was held on May 1. A Dog Show and Free Anti Rabies Vaccination was also held at Mira Hills Fil-Spanish Friendship Park on May 2 followed by the Kalesa Parade and Contest on the afternoon. PMA holds convention in Vigan

The Philippine Medical Association (PMA) held its 107th Annual Convention and Scientific Meetings on May 20 - 23, 2014 at the Vigan Convention Center. Almost 2,000 medical practitioners attended the said convention with this year’s theme “PMA Kabalikat sa Kalusugan, Kaunlaran at Maayos na Kapaligiran. It included topics in the Scientific Sessions from the various fields of Medicine. Updates on the recent advances in medical science and technology were also included to ensure quality services on patient care delivery. The convention served as a venue for continuing medical education for physicians, experts and allied health professionals.

On May 21, the City Government of Vigan through the leadership of Mayor Eva Marie S. Medina hosted a dinner party in front of the city hall, as a welcome gesture for all the participants. 15 YEARS HAVE PASSED SINCE THAT DAY WHEN WE HAD OUR CITY INSCRIBED IN THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE LIST OF SITES AND MONUMENTS. THIS WAS BECAUSE OF OUR UNITED STAND AND EFFORTS TO CONSERVE OUR ANCESTORS’ RICH LEGACY - OUR CULTURE.
TWO YEARS AFTER, IN ANOTHER SHOW OF SOLIDARITY, WE WENT ON TO HAVE THE COLONIAL STATUS OF VIGAN AS A CITY RESTORED BY CONGRESS. IN THE PLEBISCITE OF JANUARY 22, 2001, “AN ACT VALIDATING AND RECOGNIZING THE CREATION OF THE CITY OF VIGAN BY THE ROYAL DECREE OF SEPTEMBER 7, 1758 ISSUED BY KING FERNANDO VI OF SPAIN”, WAS RATIFIED BY AN OVERWHELMING 93% AFFIRMATIVE VOTES.
IN THE ENSUING YEARS, WE REAPED AND ARE STILL REAPING THE GAINS OF THESE CULTURAL AND POLITICAL MILESTONES IN TERMS OF ECONOMIC ADVANCEMENT, POVERTY ALLEVIATION, GOOD GOVERNANCE, SOCIAL SERVICES, PUBLIC SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION.
